Even though the NHL has cut the number against each intradivisional opponent from eight to six, those results still go a long way toward determining a team's finish in the standings.

The Bruins played their fifth game of the season against a Northeast Division opponent Thursday night, beating Toronto to go to 2-1-2 against the Northeast.

Saturday night, the Bruins get a second shot at the Sabres, who beat them in a shootout in Buffalo on Oct. 21.

The Bruins are 1-0 against Ottawa, 0-0-1 against Montreal (which visits next Thursday) and 1-1 against Toronto after avenging a home loss from two weeks ago.

Last year, the Bruins went 13-13-6 against the other Northeast teams. That included an 0-7-1 record against Montreal.

BRUINS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 2: Blake Wheeler changed his number before Thursday night's game, going from 42 to 26 to honor the long line of great players (including current teammate Phil Kessel and Buffalo's Tomas Vanek) from the University of Minnesota.

So far, the number has done just fine.

Wheeler delivered a hat trick in his first game as No. 26, leading the Bruins to their third straight home win.

"It's something I just wanted to do," said Wheeler, who still had No. 42 on his locker stall after the game. "I always said I wanted to change it. A couple of days ago they said, 'If you want to change it, go ahead.'"

Defensemen Dennis Wideman and Zdeno Chara also scored for the Bruins as Tim Thomas recorded another win in goal.

The game was played two weeks to the night of the Bruins blowing a 2-0 lead to the Leafs and losing. Thursday, they led 2-0 and never relinquished the lead, Wheeler capping the night with an empty-net goal.
