Don't look now, but the Bruins are in a flat-footed tie for first place in the Northeast Division.

Their win over Buffalo on Saturday night, coupled with Montreal's loss at Toronto, left the B's tied with the Sabres at 8-3-3 (19 points), both a point ahead of the Canadiens.

Now, it's really not that big of a deal for a team to be in first or tied for first after 14 games. But for the Bruins, who came into the season hoping to build off the momentum of the excitement they created off their near upset of Montreal in the first round of the 2008 playoffs ... well, a good start is a big deal.

And this big start came with the team playing its first four and five of its first six games on the road.

Being tied for first with Buffalo is also a big deal because the Sabres flew out of the gate by winning their first four games and didn't lose a game in regulation until Game No. 9.

The Bruins, who have won six of their last seven games and just swept a three-game homestand, go to Chicago Wednesday before coming home to play the Canadiens Thursday night.

BRUINS 3, SABRES 1: The Bruins welcomed two players back to their lineup Saturday night. They were missing for different reasons and both played major roles in the win over Buffalo.

Chuck Kobasew, who broke a bone in his leg in the opening game at Colorado, came back with a goal and an assist, while Manny Fernandez, who watched Tim Thomas play five straight games in goal after the pair had gone back and forth through the first eight games of the season, was strong in goal as Boston completed a sweep of a three-game homestand.

"It felt good," Kobasew said after the game. "My timing's still a little bit off but other than that it was good to be out there again."

Dennis Wideman, off a Kobasew assist, and Marc Savard also scored for the Bruins.
