The Bruins had a goal at the start of this NHL season: continue building on the momentum they gained with their comeback in last year's playoffs. They didn't win that series against Montreal, but they did rally from a 3-1 deficit to force a seventh game and thus became a bit more relevant on the crowded Boston sports scene.

But a bad start to 2008-09 would wipe all of that out. They needed a good start. They've gotten one.

The Bruins have won five straight and gone 6-1-3 over the last 10 and are in first place in the Northeast Division. They finished Wednesday night's thrashing of the dreaded Canadiens second in the Eastern Conference, on their way to meeting the No. 1 Rangers in New York on Saturday night.

The Bruins have allowed just nine goals in their last eight games and the 10 wins after 16 games are the most for the club since the 2002-03 team won 11 of the first 16.

BRUINS 6, CANADIENS 1: The fatigue of a hard-fought shootout win in Chicago and an early morning arrival back home didn't stop the Bruins from taking another huge step Thursday night.

They ended a 12-game regular-season losing streak against the rival Canadiens and won their fifth in a row, beating the hated Habs in every phase of the game.

Marco Sturm and Stephane Yelle scored two goals apiece and Yelle added an assist. The Bruins' fourth line produced three goals as 11 different players had at least one point, giving Manny Fernandez the win in goal.

"When you have all your lines going it is definitely an advantage," said Bruins captain Zdeno Chara. "Being able to use your whole lineup is crucial, especially during a heavy schedule."
