PLAYER NOTES:

--G Tim Thomas, snubbed on the All-Star ballot after making the All-Star team last year, played his fifth straight game Thursday night, making 34 saves in a 5-2 win over Toronto. "I think I've been underestimated quite a few times and it just feeds the fire to keep getting better," Thomas said. "You don't want to totally look at it always as proving people wrong but that's what it kind of boils down to." Thomas is 5-2-2 and came into the game leading the league in save percentage and second in goals-against average.

--RW Blake Wheeler, who changed his number from 42 to 26 to honor the impressive line of Nos. 26 at the University of Minnesota (including current teammate Phil Kessel), delivered his first NHL multi-goal game and hat trick in his first game with the new number. "I told them I was going to change my number before every game," Wheeler said with a smile. "They said, 'That's not a good idea.' I guess I'll stick with the number 26, it's working for me." Wheeler's six goals are second on the team to Marc Savard's seven.

--LW Marco Sturm is has two goals and four points in the last two games.

--C Marc Savard hasn't scored a goal in 10 games and his five-game assists streak ended Thursday night.

--D Andrew Ference notched his 100th NHL assist and then added No. 101.

--D Zdeno Chara scored his first goal of the season in his 700th NHL game.

--C Vladimir Sobotka was sent to Providence but is slated to come back as soon as this weekend ends, giving him three games in the minors.

--D Matt Hunwick, a healthy scratch for the nine games since the opener, dressed and logged 9:43.

--D Shane Hnidy, who turns 33 Saturday, was a healthy scratch.

--LW P.J. Axelsson hasn't scored a goal in the 10 games he's played.

--RW Petteri Nokelainen hasn't scored in the 10 games he's played.

--LW Milan Lucic hasn't scored a goal in five games since his Oct. 25 hat trick.

--RW Michael Ryder has one goal in the last 12 games.

--D Dennis Wideman had a hand -- a goal and an assist -- in both of the Bruins' first two scores.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--RW Chuck Kobasew, out since breaking his ankle in the opening game, may play Saturday against Buffalo. He was probably ready Thursday night, but coach Claude Julien didn't want to break up the David Krejci-Marco Sturm-Blake Wheeler line. Wheeler had a hat trick and the line totaled seven points Thursday night.
